The salmonella food poisoning outbreak has led to the largest food recall in United States history and has killed 9 consumers.
The CDC released a statement citing 19 clusters of infections in 5 states have been reported in schools, long-term care facilities, hospitals and other institutions which had King Nut brand peanut butter on their shelves and in their food supply. King Nut is a distributor of peanut butter made by the recently former PCA, which has since been shut down by state and federal government officials and has led to the peanut processing manufacturer to file bankruptcy in state and federal courts.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) www.fda.gov, as of today, more than 2,100 products in 17 food categories by more than 200 companies have been voluntarily recalled and the list continues to increase. Investigators from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) www.fbi.gov in Georgia and Virginia have joined the FDA to investigate possible criminal activity by executives at PCA. Lawyers for the U.S. Department of Justice www.doj.gov are also looking into the peanut crisis which has had nationwide injuries and damages to hundreds of innocent consumers.
