$900,000 Texas jury verdict for state discrimination against worker

Dallas County injury attorney-Witherite-claims $900,000 Travis County jury verdict.

Dallas, TX (AmericanInjuryNews.com)–A Travis County, Texas jury returned a $900,000 verdict to a woman after being wrongly fired from her state civil rights job. As reported by the American-Statesman, Marilou Morrison filed a lawsuit against the Texas Commission on Human Rights and the Texas Workforce Commission for violating the rights they are charged with enforcing and upholding. The Texas attorney general’s office defended the state agencies the lawsuit was brought against and lost in court on Monday.

According to court documents, Morrison, a white 58 year-old female, was an investigator at the Texas Commission on Human Rights. Morrison informed her supervisors and agency commissioners in December 2002 that black and Hispanic employees and applicants at the agency were being discriminated against. The Texas Commission was established in 1983 by the Texas State Legislature with the passing of the Texas Commission on Human Rights Act passed. Their primary purpose is to investigate and resolve complaints of employment discrimination.

The agency’s director at the time, David Powell, was allegedly hiring white employees from outside the agency who had no experience or interest in protecting and promoting workers’ civil rights. These new workers were being placed in positions above qualified minority employees which is a violation of state and federal labor laws. Morrison’s lawyers state when she blew the whistle on the unfair labor practices and discriminatory actions of the agency, she was falsely accused of aggressive behavior. These false accusations led to her being fired from her job on January 23, 2003.

The Travis County District Court jury ruled Marilou Morrison was fired because of her opposition to unlawful and discriminatory practices.
