West Texas privately run federal prison with more than 2,400 prisoners riots.
Dallas, TX (AmericanInjuryNews.com)–The Associated Press (AP), reported Reeves County Detention Center, a privately run federal prison continued to riot on Sunday. The riot which broke out on Saturday accordng to law enforcement officials about 400 miles west of Dallas is the second riot in several months. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), claimed they were attempting to restore order within the federal prison amongst inmates on Sunday.
Reeves County Detention Center in Pecos, Texas is run by the GEO group, a private prison management company. In December, 2008, a riot broke out at the same federal penitentiary while inmates were demanding better medical treatment. Reports at the time of the December riot revealed only minor injuries were suffered by correctional officers and prison inmates. The GEO group’s private management of the federal, state and local prison and correctional institutions have been the center of heated debate in the past few years in the United States. Legal experts have questioned the rehabilitation incentive a private company would have when their profits are based on the incidence of ongoing criminal activities.
