Union Pacific Railroad to pay over $200,000 asbestos fine judgement.

Dallas, TX (AmericanInjuryNews.com)–Union Pacific Railroad may agree to pay more than $200,000 in state and federal fines for violating asbestos laws. Union Pacific, based in Omaha, Nebraska, is waiting for the approval of the U.S. District Court judge to settle the government’s lawsuit arising out of allegations form 2005 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The court document filed claim an investigation by the Utah Division of Air Quality and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reveled Union Pacific’s handling of asbestos had violated the National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants. According to the lawsuit, Union Pacific removed at least 13 metal signal sheds in 2005 along a Utah railroad. Western Metals Recycling of western Salt Lake City found 123 square foot sheet of Chrysolite asbestos.

No injuries have been reported and Union Pacific Railroad Company claims they updated their signal shed demolition policy. Unfortunately, injuries and illnesses resulting from primary and secondary exposure to asbestos materials typically take 20 to 40 years to present. These debilitating and life threatening asbestos exposure diseases, like mesothelioma, a type of lung cancer, do not typically respond to medical treatment and usually result in death.
