Dallas injury Lawyer educates children injury and death facts in “non-traffic” accidents.
Dallas, TX (AmericanInjuryNews.com)–The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) www.nhtsa.gov released a recent 2007 study to evaluate deaths resulting from injuries when a vehicle has backed over the injured victim. The study also covers “non-traffic” deaths and injuries. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the study reported an astonishing 2,000 children were injured resulting in 100 kids dying as a result of being backed over and other difficult to quantify “non-traffic” accidents.
The report also asserts 221 people were killed from being backed over by motor vehicles and 14,000 people were injured. These deaths are considered unnecessary by legal experts. Vehicle safety improvement is a matter of priority to reduce the thousands of unnecessary injuries to Americans every year happening in driveways and parking lots by cars and trucks backing up.
Vehicles with better rear vision to identify children and other pedestrians in parking lots and driveways was part of a 2008 legislation sponsored by former New York Senator Hillary Clinton. The legislation also requires, by 2010, new motor vehicles will have brake interlock systems to prevent cars from shifting out of park unless the brake pedal is pushed.
The NHTSA study released a long list of injury and death statistics related to accidents involving motor vehicles which are non-traffic related. The study further reviewed police reports received by NHTSA in 2007 for pedestrian related injuries and deaths involving motor vehicles. The numbers reported claim 20,000 people were injured and 393 people were killed in crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists in driveways, parking lots and private roadways in 2007. When adult and children pedestrians come in contact with automobiles, trucks and SUVs the injuries can be debilitating, catastrophic and even result in death.
