
Arlington drunk driver kills one in car crash and critically injures another.
AmericanInjuryNews.com–The Dallas Morning News reported another drunk driving fatality occurred late Sunday night. According to police, Erica Kolanowski, 30, ran a red light at Southwest Green Oaks Boulevard and Cooper Street. She was apparently driving while intoxicated. She struck the car of Matthew Lundy, 21, of Arlington. Lundy’s passenger Joshua Thomas Carter, 20, died in the accident and was pronounced on the scene by police and emergency medical officials.
Lundy was transported by emergency medical workers to John Pete Smith Hospital in Fort Worth. He was listed in critical condition Monday morning. Kolanowski was transported to the hospital and listed in fair condition. Police authorities remain investigating the accident and Kolanowski faces charges of driving while intoxicated and intoxication manslaughter for the death of Joshua Carter.
Texas is one of eight states who requested to participate in the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) www.nhtsa.gov national campaign, Drunk Driving/Over the Limit/Under Arrest, in August 2006, to deter drunk driving. Texas is one of the top ten states in the country with high drunk driving injury and death rates involving traffic accidents. NHTSA says the tragedies and costs from driving impaired do not just end at the potential death, disfigurement, disability and injury caused by drunk drivers. Alcohol-related crashes cost more than $50 billion every year in the U.S. when property damage, lost workplace productivity, and other costs are tallied. The federal government estimates 248,000 people were injured in crashes involving alcohol in 2004 based on reports by police departments across the country.
Drunk driving is a criminal offense and accounts for injuries and deaths to hundreds of thousands of drivers and passengers be every year on American highways. Drunk drivers can be held responsible for the damages and injuries they inflict upon innocent drivers and passengers in civil court.
