On October 15, 2008, Nissan publicly announced a recall of over 200,000 vehicles in the United States and overseas. The recall includes 140,000 Nissan Altima cars from the 2007-2008 model years as well as the Infiniti EX35, G35 Sedan, G37, Nissan 350Z, Murano, and Rogue. According to Nissan, the recall affects vehicles equipped with “Continental Automotive Systems’ Occupant Classification System control units.” This manufacturing defect could interrupt a signal in the sensor system, preventing the passenger air bag from deploying in the event of a car crash.
In an interview with Brian Eberstein, the following statistics were brought to light:
• The number of vehicles recalled increased more than 25% in 2007
• Ford Motor Company recalled 5.5 million vehicles in 2007
• GM recalled 537,992 vehicles
• Honda Motor Company recalled 547,215 vehicles
• Volkswagen of America recalled 1.5 million vehicles
