New law in Congress to ban asbestos
Dallas, Texas – Many American citizens are urging their Congressmen and Senators to pass a new bill that could save many lives. If approved, the bill would ban the mining, production, use and sale of asbestos. Asbestos contamination is widespread across the United States, from the vermiculite mine in Libby, Montana to the talc mines in New York. Millions of Americans are being treated for the incurable mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis.
The bill (H.R. 6903) is winning support from many lawmakers, one of which being Texas Democrat Gene Green. Green is the chairman of the subcommittee on Environment and Hazardous Materials and has urged major concern for eliminating asbestos. Reports have estimated that every year, nearly 10,000 people in the United States die from asbestos-related diseases. Therefore, it is extremely important to have certain implementations, which would, in the long run, help our people stay healthy.
Although asbestos is a proven human carcinogen and there is no known “safe” level of exposure, those in the asbestos producing industry have convinced members of Congress that any products that contain only 1 percent or less asbestos was “safe.” But this is a fallacy soon to be rectified if this new bill is passed. The bill would set a limit of zero percent asbestos in products and an even safer limit of 0.001 percent for calcium carbonate, olivine, talc, vermiculite, and wollastonite.
Those who have been exposed to asbestos and know its effects are desperate for this legislation to pass. It is imperative that our elected officials make the right decision to pass this bill, which would fulfill their responsibility to protect the public’s health. It seems simple. If there are more than 40 countries, including all members of the European Union, that have passed strict laws concerning asbestos, why is it that the United States has taken so long?
