A second major crash in L.A. has just occurred between a Blue Line train and Metro bus near Washington Boulevard and Griffith Avenue. Reports indicate about 15 people are injured.
Los Angeles, California
According to Metro Rail, “The Blue Line travels from downtown Los Angeles to downtown Long Beach, serving many South L.A. areas, such as Compton, Vernon and Florence-Firestone.” It is the longest line in the Metro system and the second busiest light rail line in the United States carrying an average of 70,000 weekday boardings. The Blue Line began service in 1990, and since then there have been 90 documented fatalities, 20 of which were noted as suicides, reports Rick Jager, a Metro spokesman. Jager states that ‘no one on board a Metro Rail train has died in an accident, and a collision between two trains has never occurred.’ Statistics also show that a total of 821 accidents and non-fatal collisions have occurred since July 1990, and 652 of them involved a train colliding with a vehicle. Metro train officials also state that 64 of the total 90 fatalities involved the train and pedestrians, and 26 involved the train and vehicles. A Metro spokesman also
The collision happened early this morning around 6:15 a.m. when the Blue Line train was traveling towards Long Beach. Luckily, the metro bus was not carrying any passengers. Those with minor injuries were traveling on the three-car Blue Line train and although the train derailed, it did not turn on its side, as most would do if thrown off track. It was a shake-up, but the route resumed within a few hours.
Authorities are still trying to determine why the crash occurred. As we have seen with this crash and the recent wreck involving the Metrolink train, these accidents are more common than we think. It is important to get in touch with a personal injury lawyer if you have suffered injuries at the train or bus company’s expense.
